From the Clash T-shirt on the wall to the surf videos playing on the television in the corner, it's obvious that the Fish Joint is not your average sushi bar. "I'm thinking of throwing in some old Jackie Chan flicks, just to throw in something goofball," said chef and co-owner Davin Waite. "It's always a funny thing to have going on behind a sushi bar." Funny things are going on in the menu as well. The Ginger house roll, for example, is not named after the spice, but Ginger as in "Ginger and Mary Anne" from "Gilligan's Island." Waite, 25, was recruited to run the Oceanside restaurant by the owner of a cafe where he hung out after surfing. He hired his younger brother, Loren, to head the kitchen and his wife, Kim, as a waitress. He decorated the restaurant himself and chose a surfboard as a dominant art piece. While the Fish Joint might seem like a lark on the surface, it is attracting crowds any sushi bar would envy, and it's not the surf videos that are drawing them in. "I've been making sushi about eight years," Waite said. "Maybe more. I just started making sushi right out of high school." Waite moved to Santa Barbara and worked there for a couple of years after high school, but had worked for the past six years at Cafe Japengo in La Jolla.

Try a real sushi place... Kurando is good in Oside. Fish Joint - Uppity Tweaker Service, fair fish, over sauced rolls. Best about it is the beer (Pizza Port - nice) and the Tako is good. Medicore at best. Hill Street Cafe next door - same owner - much better
Well first of all if you looking for your easy going sushi bar this is the place its has some great facts about this place, one thing they do is that they accept local artist to auction off there art the also have two brother and wife and family that work there and yes they are two white guys behind the bar, but I dont know last time I checked when has america every invented their own food, united states has adopted everyone elses food from around the world so I personaly think its amazing to see another culture adopting another food to make.
The Fish Joint is my new addiction. They have awesome sushi, very original house rolls, and they serve the Carlsbad Chronic beer from Pizza Port. The restaurant itself has A LOT of personality, from the decorations to the menu. The service is always great too. Younger staff, hip and friendly. Don't hesitate to go, this place is packed with a ll of my favorites!
I'm big on local food, the Fish Joint was one of the best. Service was great, we showed up at a busy time, but they gave us two comp appitizers while we waited on our order. One was the spicy squid, it was the first time I've ever eaten squid and it was tender. Most of the time it's like chewing on rubber. I did not mind the fact it took awhile for our order to get done, because they served an order one at a time. There were five of us there and we ordered 15 different rolls. The food was refreshing and some of the best rolls I have ever had. To whoever called this a yuppie dive your wrong!!
TO be honest I was a little apprehensive when I first read a menu and saw an american behind the sushi bar. The menu looked great but I enjoy the basics(traditional) just as much as I do adventure. After a 20 min. wait we were seated at the bar and immediately put at ease with not only the best Jappaneese Yellowtail Ive had in along time, but Kanpachi(a cousin of the yellowtail). My date,(more of a roll eater)had the Mango Maddness and the Chronic roll, both were really good! I will be back for the live Sea Urchin.
My boyfriend and I went in on a Friday night but it was packed! We really didn't want to wait but there were so many people there that we knew, we didn't want to leave! It was like going out to the bars, but a much better place to see people we know. The food was awesome as was the service and for sure the atmosphere. I'm excited to see that we can actually go somewhere other than a bar and have such a great time! I will be back for sure! Next time with THE GIRLS!!!
My husband and I went in on a busy Saturday night so it was a little wait for seating but well worth it!!! We asked the chef's to recommend some things and we were blown away! We were told that the sauce was made fresh that day. I've never had anything so wonderful. I love sushi but this place made me want to come back for more and then some. We will be back for sure!
